A typical conversation with my new leasing agents:

me:  i'd like the small 1br you told me about on saturday
agent:  well, the woman currently in the place has given notice for the end of august. but we ran into her in the hallway this morning and she said she's trying to work it out so she can stay.  so we don't know if we can rent the place, we'll need to call her.
me:  um, ok, well keep me posted?

next day

agent:  we didn't hear back from her, but well she's scheduled the elevator for the end of august so that must mean she's moving out.
me:  okay, so when can i move in?
agent:  well, we'll need to turn it over and schedule painters which could take one-two weeks. it depends on the condition of the place when she moves out.
me:  so uh...the 13th?
agent:  well either the 13th or maybe the 16th, we can't really say.
me:  um, okay, so i'll just send you my money and pray you have a room for me?
agent:  yes, that sounds fine ma'am.

on top of that, they said they had a 1br currently vacant that would be available sooner...but they couldn't actually tell me when that would be ready either.

And so, the packing has begun.  Since I haven't updated in forever, I have to let the web community at large (or the one person who still avidly checks the site for updates) know that I took the road less traveled and I'm moving to Pittsburgh!  My last day at BMF is Wednesday, August 4th and I start my new job in Pitt on Monday, August 9th.

Needless to say, the whole thing has been pretty crazy, what with finding a place to live (www.thePennsylvanian.com), the stress of the decision making process, and now packing.  I love the new apartment, it's across the street from my new office downtown, has 14 foot ceilings and 8 foot windows, a washer and dryer, and even a built-in wine rack!  It's a converted train station and the entire building is just gorgeous!  Of course the leasing office is full of idiots who can't actually give me a move-in date, but maybe if I keep begging for a room they'll eventually let me in.

The new job is similar to my current job, but it has expanded responsiblities and I'll be working with all types of real estate rather than just multifamily.  And they're paying me more money (combined with the lower cost of living), so I think I'll enjoy the change!

As I said earlier, I've begun packing last nite.  I think I've finally decided to get rid of the textbooks from freshman year that I've been hauling around from place to place for the PAST SIX YEARS.  So, if anyone wants an old calculus text or perhaps a nice chemistry tome, please let me know before Sunday!  Oh, and I've got my notes from class as well.  I can't promise that they're particularly thorough, but if you want the companion guide for anything, these will also be available free of charge.

I just wanted to share with you the details of my lovely drive home last night. It poured the entire time, but despite the low visibility everything was going along swimmingly until I got over to Chain Bridge. When you come from the GW Parkway, you get to a T, left is the Chain Bridge and right is Glebe Road and my house. I get to the T and see flares and a police car blocking all but one lane of the road. So I pull up next to the copper and ask him which way I should go if I'm trying to get past where he's blocked off (just in case there was a shorter way than what I feared). His response, "You can go across the bridge or back the way you came." Yeah, thanks douchebag.

So, making an unusual snap decision, I head across Chain Bridge and right towards downtown. I drive and drive before I get to an area I recognize, finally the Key Bridge! And I make a right to head across the bridge and oh wait, no it's a wrong turn and I'm on the freeway. So here I'm still headed towards downtown and I see a sign for 66 West, awesome I'm saved! and...I take the wrong ramp (I would just like to point out that the area is under construction and there's barely any signs, just for the record). So now I'm on E Street and at least have the presence of mind to make a U-ey and head back towards the ramp to 66.

Basically this ruined my plan to get gas last nite, so on the way to work this morning I was doing fractions the entire way to determine whether I thought I had enough gas to make it to work and back (since I refuse to pay Bethesda prices). I think it will be a nerve-wracking 9-mile (yes I measured it) drive back to a gas station after work today. I figure I have at least a gallon in my tank and if I get 15 miles to the gallon...as long as there are no detours today, I think I will make it. Granted, it's always a little dicey trying to determine whether my fuel gauge is accurately reflecting what's in the tank since it bounces around all over the place once it's below half a tank.

While I'm on the topic of traffic, did someone make it National Pull-a-fuckin-U-turn-in-the-middle-of-the-street-with-no-warning Day (that was pretty difficult to type)? Because that's what everyone seemed to think today. And I don't think I should be held responsible if I run over them.
